In a proposal that sounds like it was yanked directly from the script of a science-fiction film, Washington, D.C.-based technology and defense firm Pegasus Global Holdings has announced plans to build a new city, strictly for the purposes of testing and evaluating sustainable infrastructure and technologies (via Inhabitat). The “ghost-town,” aptly called The Center for Innovation, Test & Evaluation, will be carved out of 20 square of miles of desert in New Mexico and mimic a mid-sized American city, complete with roads, buildings, power, water, and phone lines.

While residents of the state won’t be allowed to move into the test site, the project is expected to create more than 3,500 new jobs through construction and management of the town.

According to the company’s website, the Center will provide benchmark test and evaluation facilities for green energy, homeland security, next-generation wireless infrastructure, and intelligent transportation systems. This includes a highway system that allows researchers to test unmanned vehicles without endangering other drivers.

Concept photos of the Center’s above-ground renderings haven’t been made available to the public yet, but will be released within the next five months, according to Pegagus Global’s CEO Robert H. Brumley. We’ll be sure to update you once we get our hands on the futuristic designs.
